Tired and irritably amused by his reluctance she sat back in her chair and rubbed at the ache in her shoulders. The 12th Precinct was mostly quiet with very few officers working late. Outside was a cool New York night and the windows through the outer offices revealed a luminescent starlit sky. Another coffee, another report later, she sighed as she dropped the pen again and buried her face in her hands. Heaving in a deep and exhausted breath. Maybe the reports could wait. Kate was about to move from her chair when through the eerie silence she heard the unmistakable sound of a baby crying. Puzzled she blinked in surprise then frowned as she heard it again. Slowly she turned in her seat but found nothing and no one. Standing, she followed the sound towards one of the elevators. The crying growing louder as she grew nearer. Abruptly she stopped dead in her tracks at the sight that confronted her. Castle stood a few feet in front of her, his back to the elevator doors as they closed. His chestnut hair fell across his brow as he tilted his head down. She stared amazed at the little bundle of blue cloth that he cradled in his arms. "I..." Too stunned, speech was impossible.
